Vasai's Cultural Calendar

Vasai Vijay Utsav (Major Event)
Date: Around 16–18 May annually
The Vasai Vijay Utsav (Vasai Victory Festival) commemorates Chimaji Appa's victory over the Portuguese on 16 May 1739. This is the most important historical event in Vasai's calendar, featuring:
- Re-enactments of the Maratha siege and capture of the fort
- Cultural performances (traditional Maharashtrian music and dance)
- Processions and light shows at the fort
- Talks and exhibitions on Vasai's history
- Local food festivals showcasing East Indian cuisine
The festival is organized by local heritage groups in collaboration with the ASI and Maharashtra Tourism. It draws history enthusiasts and tourists from across Maharashtra.
Navratri at Jivdani Temple
Date: September – October (Navratri period)
During the nine nights of Navratri, the Jivdani Temple in Virar becomes a major pilgrimage destination. The temple is beautifully illuminated, special aartis are performed, and thousands of devotees climb the hill or take the cable car to seek the goddess's blessings. The atmosphere is electric with devotion and festivity.
Ganesh Chaturthi
Date: August – September
Like the rest of Maharashtra, Vasai celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi with great enthusiasm. The Vasai Fort area and local markets come alive with pandals. The immersion processions (visarjan) take place at Suruchi Beach and other coastal locations, creating a vibrant spectacle.
Christmas & Easter (East Indian Traditions)
Date: December / March–April
Vasai's East Indian Catholic community celebrates Christmas and Easter with unique local traditions. The churches (St. Gonsalo Garcia, St. Thomas) hold special masses. Traditional Kuswar (Christmas sweets like dodol, rose cookies, marzipan) is prepared in homes. The midnight mass at St. Gonsalo Garcia Church is a cherished event.

Maha Shivratri at Tungareshwar

The Tungareshwar Temple inside the wildlife sanctuary sees a surge of pilgrims during Maha Shivratri. Devotees trek through the forest to offer prayers at the ancient Shiva temple. The combination of spiritual devotion and nature makes this a unique experience.
Holi & Diwali
Both Holi (the festival of colours, March) and Diwali (the festival of lights, October–November) are celebrated with enthusiasm across Vasai. The local markets are decorated, and community events take place in residential areas.
