Vasai-Virar's spiritual heritage reflects its multicultural history. Ancient Hindu temples sit alongside Portuguese-era Catholic churches, and the region's East Indian community maintains both traditions with unique local character.
Jivdani Temple
Jivdani Temple, perched atop a hill in Virar, is one of the most popular religious destinations in the region. Dedicated to Goddess Jivdani (a form of Durga), the temple offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the Arabian Sea in the distance.
The temple can be reached by cable car (the Jivdani Udan Khatola, a ropeway service) or by climbing 338 steps up the hill. The cable car ride itself is a highlight, offering sweeping views as you ascend. During Navratri, the temple is beautifully decorated and draws thousands of devotees.

- Best time: Navratri (Sep–Oct), early mornings for sunrise views

St. Gonsalo Garcia Church
St. Gonsalo Garcia Church in Vasai is named after the first Indian-born Catholic saint canonized by the Vatican. St. Gonsalo Garcia (also spelled Gonzalo/Gonçalo) was born in Vasai to a Portuguese father and local mother, was a Franciscan missionary, and was martyred in Japan in 1597.
The current church building dates from the 19th–20th century but stands on a site with deep historical roots. It is an important pilgrimage destination for the East Indian Catholic community and features beautiful architecture with stained glass windows depicting the saint's life.

St. Thomas Church
St. Thomas Church is one of the oldest churches in Vasai, built during the Portuguese period. Its simple yet elegant facade and peaceful surroundings make it worth a visit. The church serves the local East Indian Catholic community and retains its original character.
- Location: Near the old Portuguese quarter, Vasai West
- Note: Smaller and less ornate than St. Gonsalo Garcia, but rich in history

Vajreshwari Temple — About 20 km from Vasai, this temple is famous for its hot springs and is often visited as a day trip from Vasai.
Churches of Vasai — A Legacy of Faith
The Portuguese built numerous churches in Vasai during their 200-year rule. While many were destroyed or fell into ruin (their remains can be seen inside Vasai Fort), several active churches continue to serve the community. The churches reflect the Goan-Portuguese architectural style with whitewashed walls, bell towers, and ornate altars.
The East Indian Catholic community maintains vibrant traditions, especially during Christmas (with the traditional Kuswar — festive sweets), Easter, and feast days of patron saints.
