Beyond the Coast

While Vasai is famous for its beaches and historic fort, the region also boasts significant natural attractions. The foothills of the Western Ghats offer lush forests, seasonal waterfalls, and excellent trekking opportunities — all within easy reach of Vasai Road station.

Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary

Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area spread over 85 square kilometers in the Palghar district. Named after the Tungareshwar Temple (a Shiva temple) located inside, the sanctuary is a haven for nature lovers and trekkers.

The sanctuary features dry deciduous forests and coastal vegetation, and is home to leopards, spotted deer, wild boars, langurs, monitor lizards, and a variety of bird species including peacocks, hornbills, and woodpeckers. The main trek leads to the Tungareshwar Temple, perched atop a hill.

  • Location: Tungareshwar, ~15 km from Vasai Road station
  • Timings: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Entry Fee: Nominal (typically Rs. 20–50 per person)
  • Trek distance: ~3–4 km one way to the temple
  • Difficulty: Moderate; some steep sections
  • Time needed: 3–5 hours

Tip: Start early in the morning (by 6–7 AM) to avoid the heat and spot more wildlife. Carry plenty of water and snacks.

Chinchoti Waterfall

Chinchoti Waterfall is a seasonal waterfall located near Naigaon, on the outskirts of Vasai-Virar. During the monsoon season (June–September), water cascades down a rocky cliff, creating a scenic pool surrounded by lush greenery.

The waterfall is a popular picnic spot, especially on weekends. The area around the falls is developing, with some small food stalls appearing during the season.

  • Location: Chinchoti, Naigaon, ~12 km from Vasai Road station
  • Best time: Monsoon and post-monsoon (July–October)
  • Entry: Free (parking charges may apply)
  • Time needed: 1–2 hours

Caution: The rocks near the waterfall can be extremely slippery. Be careful, especially during peak monsoon. Avoid venturing too close to the top of the falls. Do not swim in the pool unless it's shallow and safe.

Other Nature Experiences

Vasai Creek & Mangroves — The creeks around Vasai are lined with mangroves, home to diverse birdlife including kingfishers, herons, egrets, and migratory birds in winter. A walk along the Vasai Creek bridge at sunrise or sunset is rewarding for birdwatchers.

Beach walks — The beaches of Vasai (especially Bhuigaon and Kalamb) offer peaceful nature walks along the coastline. Early morning walks often reveal crabs, shells, and shorebirds.

Vasai Fort nature walk — The fort itself has become a unique ecosystem where nature has reclaimed the man-made structures. The banyan trees, wildflowers, butterflies, and birds make the fort a destination not just for history but also for nature enthusiasts.

Trekking Tips
